Rocky Mountain Revels was founded in Boulder County in 2001 by Steve Weinstein as an affiliate of
Revels, Inc. a national organization started in the 1970s. We are independent from Revels, Inc. with
separate non-profit status, but are contractually and artistically affiliated with Revels, Inc. We receive no
funding from Revels, Inc., but benefit from ongoing artistic input, and training for board members, and
access to a substantial library of music and scripts. Karen Romeo (Boulder, CO), the original artistic
director served from 2001 – 2015. Upon her retirement we forged ahead under a dynamic new director,
Chad Boltz, with our Board of Directors assuming the organization’s administrative functions. In 2016 we
moved our productions from the Boulder Theatre to the Gordon Gamm Theatre at the Dairy Arts Center
in Boulder. Revels provides an opportunity for intergenerational performance, often including entire
families, to interact with local professional musicians from a variety of genres. Our main production
each year is an annual holiday show featuring traditions of distinct cultures celebrating the winter
solstice. Each year focuses on distinct cultural traditions; however, there are several recurring
“touchstone” elements that connect all Revels productions, addressing the human need for celebration
and community ritual, and for hope and renewal during the darkest time of year.
